Following on from a Dada inspired workshop, a number of students we worked with were invited by Adrian Notz, Director of Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich, to be part of Instant City Reloaded, a project held on Saturday 21st of May 2016 at King's Cross. Part of the Zurich meets London festival Instant City Reloaded attempted to explore the legacy and influence Dada has had and still has on artists today.

Instant City Reloaded 2016 was a shared project by Zurich University of the Arts and today's incarnation of Cabaret Voltaire and was in collaboration with Central Saint Martins. The event celebrated a 100 years of Dadaism, a European avant-garde movement that began at Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich 1916. Artists, lecturers, performers and poets from all corners of the globe traded unique visual and written pieces inside a boxing ring during a period of 12 hours!

The form and space of the event paid tribute to poet, pugilist and proto-dadaist Arthur Cravan, who was a self proclaimed nephew of Oscar Wilde. The event's location and length, mirrored a boxing match that took place on April 23rd 1916, between Arthur Cravan and Jack Johnson. In sporting terms it is unremembered but as a moment when two fascinating cultural and personal trajectories crossed, it deserves recognition. Through self acclamation, avoidance of military conscription and an effort to pay for his passage to America, Cravan entered a staged fight with world boxing champion Jack Johnson. As agreed Craven was defeated in the sixth round, after a drawn out and uneventful match, and received his payment. Cravan believed that art was not just a matter of the mind but one of the heart and soul too.
