We have been working with the Alta Museum in Norway and the North Atlantic Salmon Fund (NASF) on a series of fundraising books to help preserve salmon stocks for future generations. The first book we published, Seven Nights on the Alta, is a personal reflection of Jan Ekman’s charting experiences and contemplates the history and future of arguably the most famous salmon fishing river. We are currently working on a new title, simply called Alta, that reproduces previously unpublished personal photographs from the authors extensive archives over a 30 year period.
Seven Nights on the Alta was written when Ekman believed that a
hydro-power project was about to cause the imminent destruction of the
river. This richly illustrated and written edition brought many environmental,
social and cultural questions to light and subsequently many of the ‘doomsday
prophesies in the book have been averted’.
The new title that we are working on demonstrates the intrinsic yet highly
social relationship between the river Alta and its fishermen. Though narrated
through the terms of salmon fishing, the book displays how society and
culture are paramountly linked to the sustainability of our environment.
